MLH X GUGS: Bigger than running

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of MLH, besides Mike saying “now get the f*** outta here” before a session, is Community. Away from Hills paying the bills, away from Track Attacks, away from chasing our PBs and Trailblazing in the mountains etc there is undying need and desire from MLH to make our country and society better in the outreach they continuously do.
The Gugulethu AC perspective of MLH:
In December 2021 I watched what would become a long-lasting relationship between MLH and Gugs AC form, when the MLH crew dropped off collected running gear in an effort to spread the running bug to those less fortunate through their #Goods4Gugs campaign.
The next highlight was the Asics running shoes initiative, that MLH once again spearheaded, which aimed again at empowering those less fortunate who are often priced our of the sport due to lack of disposable income, rather than ability. This aim was not only make people’s running dreams and PBs come true but to show them indeed we #NeverSettle on the road and in life, with ASICS and MLH handed over boxes of the brand new Gel Nimbus shoes.
In between there has been MLH Karaoke busses at both GUGS races in June and December races with MLH encouraging the greater cape town areas to support races like Gugs and look beyond the stereotypes but instead spread smiles, laughs, positivity and love. This support has never gone unnoticed and is highly appreciated. Of course, there's the additional factor that each race entry purchased, means money into the pocket of Gugs AC which in turn enables us to continue the work we do in our community.
July 2025, MLH embarked on a clothes/blanket drive, approached Gugs AC once more on the right home/organization - Gugs then approached Ikamva Labantwana in Nyanga. The call by MLH was loud and clear and the crew responded in typical overwhelming fashion – like when they chasing their PBs when racing – these were so warmly and highly received by Ikamva.
Indeed, MLH is being the change they want to see in our society. After all, actions speak louder than words.
Even more impressive, is to think this is just the Gugs AC (summarized) version and know MLH has done and collaborated with many other clubs and organizations in other areas on giving back and improving your everyday South African’s life.

Being part of both MLH (5yrs) and Gugs (10yrs), there is no better combo than the GUGS/MLH combo, and we can’t stop, we won’t stop. This is only just the beginning.
